Use These Tips to Stay Afloat During a Flood

Floods are striking the nation one city at a time…or shall we say MANY cities at a time. Could the Latonia area be next? Flash floods are the most common weather disaster in the country. Floods are able to start carrying objects away in as little as two feet of water, even a car!
To celebrate FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM), we would like to share five flood disaster preparedness tips for you and your family.

  • #1. Create a Plan – Make sure that you have a family emergency plan. Rehearse and review the plan with your family. To help our clients with this step, Paul Davis has a Get a Plan form you can print using the link at the bottom of this post.
  • #2. Develop an Emergency Kit – Here are a few of the items you should include: a first aid kit, water (a gallon of water per person for at least 3 days), battery-powered radio, signal whistle, moist towelettes, dust masks, garbage bags, pliers, and local maps.
  • #3. Clean Your Gutters – Clear debris from your gutters; to help water flow, it is vital that the drains are not clogged.
  • #4. Look at Flood Maps – It’s important to know if you live in a flood area so you can get proper insurance. Just click the link at the end of this post to view flood maps in Latonia.
  • #5. Understand Flood Terms – Do you know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning? When a flood watch is issued, it means that there is a chance a flood will happen in your area. A flood warning is saying that a flood is headed your way and that you need to be prepared.
