Tips To Avoid Disaster This 4Th of July

For many of us the 4th of July is all about fun, family, and friends! Unfortunately, for some of us the holiday brings back bad memories of celebration disasters.

Each year homes are damaged by stray fireworks and thousands of people are injured. According to The National Fire Protection Association, in 2011 firework related fires were responsible for $32 million in direct property damage.

Although firework related accidents happen each year most can be eliminated by taking basic safety steps. Below are a few tips to ensure you have a fun holiday with family and friends while staying safe!

  • Do not use consumer fireworks; instead you can go to a public display. For example, the City of  Independence 4th of July Celebration which is packed full of activities for the weekend.
  • If you are using consumer fireworks always purchase them from a reliable source.
  • Fireworks should ALWAYS be used outdoors.
  • Wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks.
  • If you are using consumer fireworks always follow the directions. Make sure you light the fireworks the correct distance away from homes, objects, and people. Never relight a dud, wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a water bucket. DO NOT attempt to make your own fireworks.
  • Soak used fireworks in a bucket before throwing them in the trash.
  • Never let children handle fireworks. Even sparklers can cause third degree burns. Children account for more than half of firework related injuries every year.
  • Light fireworks in an open space away from homes and buildings. Always have a water bucket and /or fire extinguisher near where you are lighting the fireworks.
  • If leaves, pine needles, and other debris have built up in your gutter clean the debris out before using fireworks by your home.
  • If you won’t be home for the 4th ask your neighbors to watch your home if you know other neighbors in the area will be using fireworks.
