According to the EFSi, electricity is the cause of over 140,000 fires a year.  This results in 400 deaths and $1.6 billion in property damage.

Some type of electrical distribution or lighting equipment is involved in the ignition of half of all the fires that start by electrical failures or malfunctions. Many electrical fires at home can be prevented if you are able to recognize the warning signs. One of the most important things you can do to protect your home and family is to learn about your home’s electrical system. This will allow you to better identify potential hazards.

According to the ESFi, below are a few things you should know about your home’s electrical system:

The ESFi also offers the following prevention strategies:

Identifying Potential Hazards

  • Outlets & Switches – are they working properly? Do they make cracking or buzzing sounds? Are they warm/hot to touch?
  • Cords – Are they frayed, pinched or pierced? Is the cord getting enough air?
  • Lamps / Appliances – Are you using the right bulbs? Are you using the electrical heaters/ appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions?

The ESFi also has many great resources for children, including interactive games that teach electrical safety both indoors and outdoors.  Check out those resources here.

We encourage everyone to take a few minutes and check out the ESFi website and resources to learn more about electrical safety!
